We are being told that unemployment numbers are low but at the same time we have record-breaking numbers of individuals who have given up looking for work and who have left the job market all together. So the question remains, with all of these mixed messages how can the average Black person make it in the workplace today?

While there are no easy answers to this question, there are a few universal career truths that if adopted, can at least give you a leg up on the competition and help arm you with additional ammunition to help you succeed.

Invest In Yourself
The first thing that you can do improve your chances of attaining career success is to take every opportunity to invest in your most important asset, and that is you! It doesn’t matter whether it’s a public speaking course or learning a new language; if you really want to move your career forward you need to make yourself more marketable by both developing new skills and upgrading your existing skills.

The complex mix of problems facing our society today makes it necessary for organizations to actively seek out employees who have the ability and the capacity to be lead. When we say lead, we’re not necessarily meaning having a title of supervisor or manager; because having a title doesn’t necessarily make someone a leader; no what we’re referring to is the ability to stand up, make smart decisions, and take ownership of the situation. Leaders are the ones who are looked to for answers, guidance, and direction.

Well the real truth is, if you intend to achieve career success you must learn how to set real goals and prioritize your life. You need to set both short and learn term goals. Ask yourself – “Where do I want to be in one year, five years, ten years?” Then put together an action plan that outlines the steps you need to take to help you reach your goal(s).
