These social media tools have enabled us to share our lives with just about anyone in the world. When used for good these tools can help you advance your career, but when real thought isn’t put into what you do online, you could actually end up jeopardizing your career instead.
One of the recent trends in employment recruiting today is for employers to do an online search of their job candidates. Employers can and will review the most popular social media sites to get a clearer picture of who you are and to see if you’re the right cultural fit for their organization.
This means that you need to be careful about what you post to social media. Inappropriate photos, hateful or derogatory language, or bad mouthing an employer are just some of the things that can cause the door to be shut in your face.
Even if you already have the job, you still need to be concerned, as social media has caused many individuals who are already employed a few problems as well.

Another thing to remember is that if you are in a leadership role such as supervisor, manager, etc. you are typically held to a higher standard of conduct. So you need to really guard your social media activity. Just think of how embarrassing it would be for one of your direct reports to get a post you made online complaining about your “stupid” employees.
Now we are not saying that you can’t be free to express yourself on social media and live your life the way you want to, no what we’re saying is that you just need to think before you post, tweet, chat, pin, or like.
