In fact life is filled with so many challenges and demands that it is easy for even the strongest person to become overwhelmed and stressed.

What is Stress?
Stress is simply your bodies normal response to the things in life that make you feel upset, fearful, or even threatened also known as your “flight or fight” reaction.

A little bit of stress every now and then is not bad, in fact, it can serve as a motivator pushing you to excel and push harder towards your goals. It can also work as a cautioning agent – alerting you to potential threats and danger. The problem arises when you allow too much stress to build up too often. This excess of stress can cause you to become run down physically, mentally, emotionally.

The good news, is that even though certain amounts of stress are inevitable, there are steps that you can take to reduce it and the negative impact that it can have on your life.

The first thing you need to do better manage stress is to first find out what is stressing you out! Is it your work load, is it a co-worker, or is it changes happening within the organization? By identifying the true causes of your stress you will be better armed to deal with it.

Avoid It
Recognize that it is probably impossible for you to completely avoid all of life’s stressors, you can take simple steps to avoid “unnecessary” stress. This can be done by better managing your time, setting personal boundaries, learning how to say “no”, and if at all possible avoiding those people who stress you out.

Say It
A lot of the stress in our lives can build up because of our inability to honestly express our thoughts and feelings about a particular person, situation, habit, or behavior. Meaning that instead of constantly biting your tongue and letting feelings of stress bottled up inside, you need to share what’s on your mind tactfully and assertively – being certain to set clear boundaries ad expectations for the persons who are at the source of the problem.

Move On
One of the best life lessons that you can ever learn is that there will always be things that you cannot control nor change. This includes layoffs, the carelessness of others, sudden illness, and any other number of life’s inevitable setbacks. The only thing you can control is your attitude and your response to these events, everything else you just have to let go and learn how to accept the inevitable, pick up the pieces, and move on.
