This means that one of the most important things that you can do to advance your career is to learn how to dress for real career success.

While there are a litany of things you can do to make your appearance work for you at work, here are four tried and true tips that are sure to get you noticed for all the right reasons.

Good Grooming Is a Must
You can wear the latest fashions right off the runway, but the truth is if you are not well groomed you are basically wasting your time. Being well groomed demonstrates to others that you care about yourself and that you have good self-esteem. Good grooming consists of all the things you do before you get dressed. This includes your personal hygiene and your personal styling.

The first key here is to ensure that your personal hygiene is intact which means cleanliness is an absolute must. The second key is making sure your personal style including hair & makeup are appropriate for your work environment.

This doesn’t mean that you have to give up on the styles you love but it means you have to make sure the style is appropriate for the career you want. Typically this means hair should be properly done, for gentleman this also includes facial hair.

Ethics And Integrity In The Workplace
Dressing better makes you look more capable but it also serves to boost your confidence and self-esteem; after all when you look better, you will feel better.

Get Noticed For Your Work
Your goal should be to get noticed for your work ethic and performance not for being provocative. Excessively tight, short, or revealing clothing is never appropriate for work and in most organizations is a clear violation of company dress code. So this means no matter how good it looks on you, you need to leave that “freak-em” dress in the closet. Sexually charged clothing are not the only thing that’s inappropriate for work; clothes with obscenities, political or religious messages, or other words or symbols that can be deemed threatening or offensive are also frowned upon at work.

Put it all Together
Your style and your appearance should tell an overall story about both who and what you are. Think of the way you dress like the packaging of a product on the shelf in the store. If a product looks appealing and is well packaged chances are you will perceive it to be a good quality product and will chose it over one that is not packaged well. The same is true for your appearance if you are packaged for success from head to toe, then others will view you in a much better light and perceive you to be someone who is trustworthy, professional, and capable of getting the job done.
Building Your Career Network
Must Be Neat & Well Pressed
Torn, tattered, wrinkled, or unkempt clothing is never appropriate for work. You need to make sure that your clothes are first work appropriate and second well maintained. This means dry cleaning and ironing are a must. As a rule of thumb you should try to dress a minimum of one step above the job you have preferably for the job you want. That means if everyone on your job where’s khakis and a t-shirt you should wear slacks and a polo.
