You are the “captain” of your own ship and whether that ship sinks or stays afloat is up to you.
This is an important fact to know because so often we see ourselves as victims and the problem with seeing yourself is a victim is that when you do, you will start to think and act like a victim.
If you allow this victim mentality to take root in your life it will permeate every aspect of it, and that includes your professional life.
The victim mentality prevents you from owning your own performance, your own success, and your own failures. Thus making you subservient to some force or some other person. You start to believe that you can’t make it, and when you start to believe that what you end up with, is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If instead you believe that you have the power to achieve success on your own, you will begin to think and act in a way that will bring you closer to that success.

Ethics And Integrity In The Workplace
After all it’s easy to be a victim. It’s easy to say things like “The reason I didn’t get that job is because I’m Black!” or “They didn’t want to give that raise because they don’t like me!” When you think and say these things you are in essence freeing yourself from any responsibility. Perhaps the reason you didn’t get the job, had nothing to do with your skin color, maybe it had to do with the fact you were not prepared during your interview!
By considering the latter, you will be able to “grow and go” that is learn from a situation and then work on developing your skills so that you can be better prepared for the next time.
It’s really your choice, you can decide to take responsibility for your where and put together a smart action plan for success or you can play the blame game and end up running around in circles only to realize you aren’t going anywhere! We hope you have the courage to make the smart choice and take your career into your own hands and make it work!
Building Your Career Network
Now will it be easy? Absolutely not, in fact it’s hard to take ownership of your life and your career, that’s why so many are comfortable with being a victim.
